HEALTHY AGING DECADE

The United Nations declared the Decade of Healthy Aging from 2021 to 2030; it urged governments, private sectors, universities and society to combine their actions for the benefit of the elderly, their families and the community.

The elderly are a reference of wisdom and an economic, social and cultural drive for our societies and it is our task to contribute towards improving the quality of life of our fellow citizens and promote a more inclusive and equitable world.

According to UN data, it is estimated that by 2050, 22% of the population will be over 65 years old and that the number of people over 80 will represent around 426 million people. Since 1950, all regions of the world have experienced a considerable increase in life expectancy and a general improvement in longevity. These factors and declining fertility are key to the global aging of the population.

The increase in the age of the population brings us new challenges, from the shift in mindset, the way we relate to aging, the productive and labor integration of the silver generation, to the needs for accessibility, care and support networks.

Are we prepared for these new times or will we contribute to this evolution?

We need action plans, proposals for public policies, advocacy and specific recommendations to give priority to the elderly, as well as towards development, the promotion of health and well-being in the aging process and the creation of an enabling environment for the active integration of the senior community.
